(September 21, 2025) Mena, Arkansas - After a road win at Murray State on Wednesday, the ladies returned home this afternoon against Redlands Community College. Entering the match, the ladies were 5-0-1 (2-0-1 in region play) on the season and were beginning their way through the Region 2 North Division opponents.
UARM took control of the game early on but struggled to turn the possession into open scoring opportunities and relied on long shots, or acute angle shots, which had a very low probability of troubling the goalkeeper. As a result, Redlands was able to soak up the UARM attacks and look to counter attack, feeding off their target play with supporting runs from deep which had UARM on their back foot at times. As the first half ticked along, the shots from UARM began to get closer to scoring as numerous shots started hitting all areas of the framework of the goal. Just as it looked like it was just going to be one of those unlucky days where the goal would not come no matter what you did, UARM took the lead with a very scrappy fortuitous goal. Just after the half hour mark, Caitlyn Turner (Napier Hawkes Bay, New Zealand) put in a cross to the far post where Solange Depirou (St. Albans, England) scrambled the ball into the net under pressure from defenders converging on the ball. It was Depirou's third goal of the week.
The ladies were happy to go into the halftime break up a goal, but there was concerned with the general play in possession, leading to bad decision making in front of goal. A tactical change was made pushing the wide players higher to threaten the space behind Redlands' back line, instead of always looking to come short to receive a pass. The simplicity of passing and moving the ball quickly was stressed, and the team took to the field with a very clear picture of what was expected of them for the 2nd half.
The change in emphasis had an immediate effect as a second goal was scored within 4 minutes of the restart. Maya Lane (Southend-on-Sea, England) received the ball in space on the right wing and her cross was controlled at the far post by Gavi Urias (Little Rock, AR) who set herself up with a powerful shot into the roof of the net to make it 2-0 for the Bucks. It was Urias' first collegiate goal.
UARM really started to dominate possession of the ball, but as in the first half, the shooting was both erratic and unrealistic which kept Redlands in the game. Once again, some shots were hitting the posts and crossbar of the Redlands' goal, but in the main, many of the shots were high and wide. The game was over with five minutes to go when another cross from the right found Caitlyn Turner in the penalty area and her lay off was expertly finished by Gavi Urias into the corner of the net. The ladies won 3-0 and moved to 6-0-1 (3-0-1) on the season.
Coach Kevin Sherry was happy about the win, but also about the progress and coachability of his team. "More than the result, I am most happy about how the team played in the 2nd half. It is too easy to be critical of the shooting and the decision making process which goes into finishing scoring opportunities, and would rather look at the positives. Seeing a team who executed the plan they were given at half time exceptionally well. The team played more to the principles we have been preaching all season and the improvement was there for all to see. I could see many players grow and develop before my very eyes, and if they continue to listen and put into action what we ask of them, I see a bright future, not only for the team this season, but for individuals hopefully moving onto the next level."
The Bucks hit the road on Wednesday for a big matchup at Rose State College. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 pm in Midwest City, Oklahoma.
